What is buoy's law?

by Tim Atkinson | Apr 26, 2023 | Advocacy, Home Page News | 0 comments Buoy’s Law is a new NY State Law that requires veterinarians to advise owners about potential harmful drug side-effects. Although Buoy’s Law is scheduled to go into effect this summer, draft regulations have not yet been published.

When does buoy's law come into effect?

Section 2 amends section 3 of chapter 678 of the laws of 2022, consti- tuting Buoy's Law. Section 3 extends the effective date. Chapter 678 of the Laws of 2022, (known as Buoy's Law) requires disclo- sures to be made to pet owners upon prescription, dispensing, or provision of drugs by a veterinarian and becomes effective on June 13, 2023.

Why did New York vets oppose buoy's law?

It's done with humans," she said. For years, New York veterinarians opposed Buoy's Law, requiring vets to share with pet owners all potential risks in writing. The bill was amended so vets must inform the owner of "common, reasonably anticipated adverse effects" of medications. Opposition was withdrawn, and Buoy's Law was signed in December.
